One of the sneakiest items of clothing on the planet may be Overalls. They do not seem hard to style at first glace-they are basically a one-and-done dress, similar to jumpsuits. But the fear sets in and questions arise after trying on 10 different shirts and four shoe models. Is there a way, without looking like a 5-year-old, to wear overalls? Oh, or a farmer? Or the train’s cartoon conductor?

I can tell you, as someone who supported the movement a few years ago, that the short answer is yes. Before you get ready, however there are a few things to bear in mind. I have a handful of tried-and-true outfit ideas to help you nail this trend, along with some inspiration courtesy of street style stars, if you’re looking for an outfit that goes beyond the simple white T-shirt and sneakers combo.

You can Go With Something Striped. My favorite way to wear overalls is to add a nautical twist to stuff, styling underneath a striped shirt or sweater. Without being intimidating or distracting, it’s classic and eye-catching. Then with a pair of white sneakers, you can easily complete your look.

Button Up. Similar to a simple white tee, it is a no-fail decision to style your overalls with a collared top. If you’re trying to keep things fresh while still looking elevated and fancy, though, consider a polo shirt or cardigan instead, two of the moment’s biggest trends.

You’ve got to think big. For one big reason, I love puffy- and ruffled-sleeved tops: they are great for layering. It’s simple to throw on a T-shirt with a voluminous sleeve detail, but it makes a huge, whimsical statement at the same time.

You can Try Overall Shorts. Overall shorts, with stores such as Urban Outfitters and Old Navy offering pairs on their websites, are on the list of ’90s classics that have returned. An simple solution to keep cool in the summer is a crop top or bralette underneath, but shortalls. As they’re calling, also look great with a comfortable sweatshirt, particularly one in a fun, neon color.

Look Forward. There’s another justification for investing in a pair of overalls now: they were included in their Fall 2020 collections by brands like Hermes, signaling that the trend is here to stay.

You Should Switch Up the Shoes. A pair of strappy, heeled sandals is another smart choice on top of wearing overalls with sneakers and boots, turning a laid-back look slightly dressy.

You can Play Around With Graphics. Personally I love when a pair of overalls peeks out from below the text on a T-shirt; it’s a fascinating detail, and a way to make your overalls all your own. Another simple way of bringing it up a notch is a colorful printed top.

You can Forget Traditional. Denim overalls are not the only pair in your wardrobe that belongs to you. There are also fake leather, corduroy, and patterned selections to choose from, all of which will shift the outfit’s overall vibe and function on a number of occasions, whether it’s the workplace or a music festival.
